Rule of 4’s

A Simple Guide to Happy, Healthy Rabbits

The Rule of 4’s is an easy way to remember the core basics of responsible rabbit care. It helps new and experienced owners make sure their bunny has everything they need to stay healthy, social, and stress-free.

01

4 Feet on the Ground

Rabbits feel safest when all four of their feet are on a solid surface. Avoid picking them up unless necessary, as it can cause stress. Instead, interact with them at their level, allowing them to come to you.

02

4+ Kinds of Foods

A rabbit’s diet should include four main types of food:
Hay: Unlimited fresh hay is essential for their digestive health.
Fresh Vegetables: A variety of leafy greens and vegetables.
Pellets: High-quality, rabbit-specific pellets in moderation.
Fresh Water: Clean, fresh water should always be available.

03

4 Hours of Exercise

Rabbits are active animals that need at least four hours of exercise outside their enclosure each day. This can be done in a rabbit-proofed area where they can run, hop, and explore to maintain their physical and mental health.

4 Checks A Day

Conduct regular checks throughout the day to ensure your rabbit is healthy and comfortable:
Food and Water: Check that they have access to fresh hay, vegetables, pellets, and water.
Litter Box: Ensure their litter box is clean and they are using it properly.
Behavior: Observe their behavior for any signs of distress or illness.
Environment: Make sure their living space is safe, clean, and free from hazards.
