The differences between baby bunnies and adult bunnies.
Your allergies can completely react differently to younger bunnies versus older bunnies. Allergies to animals are typically triggered by specific proteins found in their dander, saliva, and urine, and these protein levels can change significantly as the animal ages, matures, and goes through different coat changes.
Developing Dander: Baby bunnies (under 6 months) often have different dander compositions and softer fur textures than mature rabbits. As a rabbit reaches adulthood, the proteins they shed can change, meaning a bunny that doesn’t trigger an allergy in infancy might start to cause issues later on.
Adult Coat Changes: Rabbits typically go through a major coat change around 4 to 6 months of age, replacing their baby fur with adult fur. This transition often releases more dander and sheds fur into the air.
Hidden Environmental Triggers: People are often allergic to the hay rabbits eat (like timothy hay) or the bedding they use, rather than the rabbit itself. Younger bunnies may eat different types of hay (e.g., alfalfa) compared to adult bunnies, or they may simply make less of a mess, altering the amount of dust you are exposed to.
Allergy management tips:
Use covered/hooded litter boxes to contain hay, litter, and waste dust.
Store extra hay in a sealed container, garage, or isolated area outside the main living space (if possible).
Change clothes immediately after cleaning or handling the bunny and wash them.
Wash hands thoroughly (and clean glasses/contacts) after any contact with the bunny or their items.
Wash bedding regularly: Bunny blankets, mats, and your own sheets, pillowcases, and blankets.
Vacuum frequently: Floors, walls, door frames, window ledges, lamps, and curtains. Avoid ceiling fans if they stir up dust.
Immediately remove soiled litter and hay from the house
Run air purifiers in rooms where the bunny stays or where you spend time.
Switch to lower-dust hays like orchard grass, oat hay, or first-cut Timothy (at the appropriate age)
Use pet-friendly cleaning products, such as Allersearch ADMS Anti-Allergen Spray, to help maintain a clean and allergen-conscious environment.
