Maggie and Her Kitty Tito: A Rescue Story

Maggie is just one example of the bunnies we’ve recently rescued, and her story highlights the incredible impact of your donations. Your generosity covers the costs of supplies, vet visits, and food, allowing our volunteers to focus on what matters most: providing the love and care these animals desperately need.

A Call for Help

A few months ago, Reno Rabbit Rescue received an urgent late-night call. A woman in crisis was caught in a difficult family dispute. With police involved and less than an hour to leave her home, she needed immediate help finding a safe place for her bunny, Maggie.

Maria, one of our volunteers, and her husband, Terry, stepped up. Terry went to the scene and found himself in the middle of a heated domestic dispute. The situation was chaotic, involving a screaming woman who appeared delirious or possibly suffering from dementia. After explaining his role with Reno Rabbit Rescue, Terry was allowed to leave with Maggie, who was in a small cage—scared, cold, and shaking.

Finding Safety

Back at Maria and Terry’s home, they set up a quiet, cozy space for Maggie with fresh hay, water, and a clean litter box. When they opened her cage, Maggie refused to leave, staying in her small space for nearly two weeks. She was too frightened to eat or drink on her own, so Maria and her family took turns sitting by her, talking softly and petting her to help her feel safe. They syringe-fed her critical care and water during this time.

The Road to Recovery

Maggie’s stress caused bowel issues, including diarrhea and irregular stools. Maria and Terry provided at-home care while monitoring her closely to determine if an emergency vet visit was necessary. Maggie’s nails were also severely overgrown, making her uncomfortable and putting her at risk of injury or infection. A fellow volunteer came to help trim her nails, giving her much-needed relief.

With consistent care, Maggie slowly began to heal. After about two weeks, her stools returned to normal, and she started eating on her own. Maria even introduced her to papaya bites as a morning treat, which she quickly learned to love.
